How to Find Joy in Pain

January 29, 2010

You can find joy in pain.  Paul did.  He was in prison for preaching Jesus, his so-called brothers were taking advantage of his imprisonment, and his life was in danger.  But he celebrated the progress the gospel had made through his imprisonment and persecution.  As to the risk of execution, Paul said, “To live is Christ, and to die is gain.”  Jim Elliot, missionary to the Auca indians of Ecuador, gave his life for the progress of the gospel.  In his words, “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.”  Step into a world in which pain and death are not worth comparing to the glory that God will reveal in us.

The Joys of Being a Slave

January 22, 2010

The Christian life is relentless pursuit of happiness. In his most joy-filled letter, Paul reveals the motives that drive him and the habits that feed his joy. Since Paul’s happiness is completely wrapped up in the glory of God, he finds joy in places we might not expect. His greeting to the Philippians shows his delight in being a slave of Christ and making disciples of Christ.

Proof that Jesus Rose from the Dead

November 6, 2009

Wednesday night we studied Acts 1:1-11.  In this passage Luke wrote that Jesus gave “many convincing proofs” that he had risen from the dead.  Some of the “convincing proofs” to which Luke refers are listed in Luke’s gospel:

  • He allowed the disciples to see and touch his hands and feet (Luke 24:39).
  • He ate food in their presence to show he was not a spirit or ghost (Luke 24:41-43).
  • He showed them that the Scriptures (our Old Testament) prophesied the very events they were witnessing (Luke 24:44-48)

The skeptic might say, those proofs would be convincing if I had witnessed them myself, but how can I believe that Jesus really did these things?  Can we have that same confidence in Jesus resurrection?

Yes. John Piper of Desiring God Ministries lists 9 Ways to Know the Gospel is True.  One of which is:

Nobody has ever explained the empty tomb of Jesus in the hostile environment of Jerusalem where the enemies of Jesus would have given anything to produce the corpse, but could not.

The entire Christian movement could have been snuffed out if the opponents of Christianity had produced Jesus’ corpse.  But they could not.
