Will you help me with my homework?

If you volunteer for the Crestwood after school program, you will help students with their homework, feed them dinner, and be a positive role model in their lives. That smells like real Christianity.

For years Morrison Heights has partnered with Pastor Johnny Rayford and his church, Crestwood New Life Baptist Church in downtown Jackson. So far this semester we haven’t had anyone step up to lead our work at Crestwood. It’s time to fix that.

Check it out Tuesday, October 18. If you’re interested in volunteering at Crestwood, come see what it’s all about.

Meet at 2:45 p.m. between Nelson Hall and the cafeteria at MC.

In conjunction with Mississippi College’s Family Weekend, October 7 & 8, Kaleo will host our annual Family Brunch for our students and their parents on Sunday, October 9 at 9:30 a.m. during our regularly scheduled time for The Path. Hope to see you ALL here on the 9th and we hope to see your face this Sunday!

Podcasts are up!

Podcasts from the last few weeks are up!  You can download them here.  You can also do a search in iTunes for Kaleo College Ministry.  We’ll try to post the podcasts within a few days of the sermon, so you never have to miss a message!

Mike Licona Bible Conference

Mike Licona, the apologetics coordinator for the North American Mission Board will lead a Bible Conference at Morrison Heights September 11 and 12. A special session will be held at Mississippi College on September 12 for students.

Sunday 10:45 am (MHBC): The Case for the Resurrection of Jesus
Why should others believe Christianity is true in the face of so many worldviews? Can we know for certain? Are there any hard-core facts? Historical investigation surprisingly reveals that Jesus’ resurrection was an event in history and is the ‘silver bullet’ you’ve always wanted for knowing or showing that Christianity is true.

Sunday 6 pm (MHBC): John, Paul, and the Fab 4 on Jesus
Nowhere do the Gospels say “Jesus is God.” So, why do Christians believe that He is? In this lesson, New Testament historian Mike Licona serves as your guide to discovering what Jesus claimed about Himself and why the earliest Christians believed He is God.

Monday 3 pm (MC, President’s Meeting Room A, BC Rogers Student Center): Islam and Jesus: We are accustomed to hearing about Islam regularly; but do any of us actually know anything about the religion? What would you say to a Muslim student who questions your beliefs? If you’re not sure, then come learn about the main tenets of the Islamic faith and learn how a Christian can share with those who adhere to Islamic beliefs.

Monday 7 pm (MHBC): Only One Way?
Nonbelievers—and even believers such as Rob Bell—often resent Christians who claim belief in Jesus is required in order to enter heaven. Learn what Jesus actually taught and how to communicate it to those who would otherwise think of you as ‘a bigoted and narrow-minded fundamentalist.’

A Gospel for the Self-Righteous

I had coffee with a student this afternoon. We swapped stories of living under the law–trying to keep up a righteous reputation and hide a sinful heart.

Many of us live there, trying to do enough good things to be one of the good people. But some of us are blessed with a moment when everything is lost and we’re exposed as one of the bad people. It is in that moment, when the illusion of holiness is shattered, that we are most receptive to the grace of Christ.

The gospel holds little appeal for the self-righteous. We want something we can earn…something we can be proud of. But grace is nothing to be proud of. To accept forgiveness is to admit weakness.

That is the very reason Christians can be attracted to “another gospel.” The Galatian Christians were being led astray to a “gospel” that appealed to the self-righteous. According to this “gospel” holiness was something you had to earn by obeying a set of rules. Maybe you could be a Christian if you believed in Jesus, but to be a good Christian, you had to follow these rules.

The gospel is good news for bad people. Until we realize that we need Christ’s forgiveness, we will reject it and keep depending on our own good works to earn God’s favor and man’s approval.
